Ruined Church, Daman

The eerie silence coupled with softly blowing breeze of winter afternoon assured us of tranquility. And who imagined the utmost placidity we find in ruins. A testament to Portuguese legacy, the convent of Dominican was built in 1567 A.D. The sign board says "This monastery was once a great seat of theological studies, a seminary of global repute for priestly noviciates that attracted Catholic scholars from far and wide".

It is hard to believe once the same church exuded charm and distinct features. Now it is nothing but tall walls that are plain simple. Originally it had an alter on the northern side with rectangular prayer hall in front and dormitories to the right. How the grandeur of this majestic structure turned into shambles is still a mystery. Though in remnants this 450 years old convent is a tribute to the glorious past. We could sit here and stare at nothingness for hours, that is the effect this place had on us.

We had a strong feeling that song "Kambakkht Ishq Hai Jo" from the movie "Pyaar Tune Kya Kiya" was shot here. Sadly nobody was present to confirm or reject our notion. Anyone out there to enlighten us?

To see the sunset and make a wish upon the horizon we dragged ourselves to Devka beach. It is ideal to spend at least 2 to 3 days in this quaint coastal city of Daman to enjoy the enthralling landscape, salty beaches, forts, and churches.
